Kitchen Conversion
15 Ulundi road, Greenwich SE3
Context
The first brief was to design a kitchen with dining area that would have the maximum amount of sunlight, have a new utility area and allow for a new shower room. In order to accommodate these requirements the proposal had to utilise the full width of the house.
Since the site was in a conservation area the proposal was split into two elements to reduce the massing effect in order to gain planning permission. To achieve this a slot window was incorporated to separate a flat roof over the kitchen area and the hipped roof over the dining area. To increase the amount of light a skylight was fixed to canted steel beams that were both slotted into the existing wall. The glass slot ran up along the front and along the roof to create an opening that was situated above the galley area between kitchen units and island units. The effect was to create two buildings outside with a large, open and lofty well-lit space inside.
